Hajime Uno is a biostatistician devoted to collaborative clinical and methodological research that promotes an improved understanding of human disease. He is Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and works in the Department of Data Science and the Division of Population Sciences at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where he has been on the faculty since 2008.
His methodological research develops summary measures and inference procedures for time-to-event outcomes that are more robust and more clinically interpretable than model-based quantities such as the hazard ratio. This includes the average hazard with survival weight, the restricted mean survival time, and a body of work on evaluating risk prediction models for clinical outcomes based on standard clinical parameters and biomarkers. Each of these methods is released as open-source software for R and Stata so that it can be used directly in real studies.
Alongside this methodological work, he collaborates closely with clinical investigators across oncology — on clinical trials, observational and comparative-effectiveness studies, cancer genetics, and cancer care delivery — and leads Uno1Lab at Dana-Farber.
